5 Neck Exercises You Should Be Doing

neck pain at workDo you often feel discomfort in your neck? Stretching exercises can help to restore motion and relieve the pain you're feeling. Here are some tips to keep in mind before you get started:

 

  • It's better to do most neck exercises during or after a shower. Moist heat relieves pain by increasing blood flow to the muscles in your neck.

  • As your neck feels better, you can gradually increase the number of times you do each exercise. Be careful not to overdo it, though – stop when you are fatigued.

  • Make sure to stand up straight during each exercise.

 

Now that you know these tips, you're ready to learn the exercises:

 

  1. Turn your head slowly as far as possible to the right. Hold for 3-5 seconds. Then return your head to its normal position and relax. Do the same exercise on the left side on your neck. Repeat 5 times.

  2. Try to touch your chin to your chest. Then raise your head backwards and look up at the ceiling. Repeat 5 times.

  3. Try to touch your left ear to your left shoulder. Then return your head to its normal position and relax. Do the same with your right ear and right shoulder. Repeat 5 times.

  4. Raise both shoulders as close to your ears as possible. Hold the position as you count to five, then relax. Stretch your shoulders backwards as far as possible and hold, then relax.

  5. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Clasp your hands behind your back and pull downward toward the floor. Take a deep breath, stand on your toes, and look at the ceiling as you pull down. Hold this stance for 3-5 seconds, then exhale slowly. Repeat 5 times.
