If you are in the process of applying for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, you know firsthand how frustrating, time consuming, and overwhelming the process can be. You may be facing months or even years of waiting, appeals, and decisions, and when you are finally awarded your benefits, you do not want to do anything to jeopardize losing them.

Of course, if you already receive these benefits, you know the payments are not making you rich. SSD benefits are more of a source of income for very select necessities, and you are probably busily finding ways to stretch a dollar as much as possible.

Can You Return to Work While on SSD Benefits?

Perhaps over time, your doctor has found a new treatment that alleviates the symptoms and side effects of your disability. You are told that you may be able to function at a higher capacity than before, and you are eager at the opportunity to return to the workforce. You have found a part-time job that can accommodate you for a few hours each week, and could serve as a nice supplement to your small income.

Before you even consider moving forward with obtaining employment, however, you are faced with several questions. Will you lose your SSD benefits permanently? What if your condition worsens again? When you think back on your application process, suddenly the job seems less important.

Fortunately, there may be a way for you to test the waters before diving in headfirst. The Social Security Administration offers a trial work period that allows you to try working for a short amount of time without revoking your benefits. You will be able to collect SSD benefits for nine months once you begin earning a monthly wage of at least $780, and if you continue earning that amount beyond the nine months, your benefits will end.

Before you make any decisions about your benefits and the trial work period, it is important that you fully understand the pros and cons of your decision.
