How to Know When it’s Time to Roll Out New Tires

You were driving along Rte. 10 during a cold, windy, and rainy day. Although you would have liked to stay in bed under your warm covers, you had to go to work. Just like any day it rains, traffic was slow and irritating, and more than a few vehicles were pulled over on the shoulder.

As you approached your exit, you came upon a deep puddle. You were able to navigate through the water just fine, but the vehicle behind you wasn’t as lucky. The car began to hydroplane, and smashed into the back of your bumper, causing you to hit a road sign. A trip to the hospital revealed a concussion and whiplash.

Preventing Accidents Begins With Good Tires

Your tires are what protect you from the road. When your tires are in poor shape, you are prone to experiencing dangerous accidents, such as those caused by hydroplaning. Here, we look at the warning signs of a tire gone bad.

  • Low tread. Your tire should have at least 1/16 inch, or 1.6 millimeters, of tread. By using a penny, you can tell if your tires have enough tread. Insert your penny so that Abraham Lincoln’s head is touching your tire. If you can still see the former president’s entire head, you don’t have enough tread on your tires and should purchase a new set.
  • Cracks in the sidewall.  Tires that are worn and dry-rotting will often display cracks in the sidewall. Take a good look at all of your tires and if you see holes or cracks, it’s time for some new ones.
  • Bulges and blisters. When the outer surface of the tire begins to weaken, you may detect bulges or blisters that extend outwards from the rest of the surface. These tires are dangerous and should be replaced immediately.
