What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma general comes up in conversations about asbestos, but do you really know what it is? First of all, the mesothelium is a lining of thin membrane found in the lung, chest, and abdominal cavities. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer found in themesothelium. Malignant tumors often form a solid coating around the lung, and then spread to other parts of the body.

In 90% of cases, mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos but victims don’t generally experience symptoms until 20 to 50 years after the exposure. The longer and more intense the exposure, the higher the possibility for this type of cancer. There is also evidence that mesotheliomas may be caused by other agents including radiation, viruses, and man-made mineral fibers.

Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Others have been exposed toasbestos in a household environment, often without knowing it.

There is no known cause for the disease and treatment options are limited. Consulting with a Warren County workers’ compensation attorney can help victims determine their rights. In the event you are suffering from an occupational illness, you have two years from the date you learned of your condition in order to file a claim. So, if you were working at a construction site and twenty years later learned you have mesothelioma as the result of contact with asbestos, you have two years from the date you learned about your condition and learned the illness or disorder was work-related in order to file a claim petition. You must prove the condition is related to your former employment.

Mesothelioma is a tragic and devastating condition. Warren county workman’s comp lawyer Manfred Ricciardelli can help you and your family get the compensation you deserve.
