6 Ways to Avoid Computer Eye Strain

We’ve all felt it – that tired, strained feeling your eyes get when you’ve been on the computer for too long. While it’s true that computers make us more productive, staring at the screen for long periods of time can lead to computer vision syndrome (CVS). Here are 6 simple ways to prevent computer eye strain:

  1. Enlarge text. Reading small text can strain your eyes, so it’s a good idea to keep it large. You can do this easily in most browsers by holding Ctrl and pressing +.

  2. Print out long articles or documents. This will give your eyes a break from staring at the computer screen.

  3. Brightness down, contrast up. If your screen is too bright, it can be hard on your eyes. If there’s not enough contrast between black and white on the screen, it is hard for your eyes to distinguish between different items. You can usually adjust the screen’s brightness and contrast using the buttons on the bottom or side of the monitor.

  4. Take regular breaks. Walk around, stretch, or even just look away from the computer every 15 minutes or so.

  5. Reposition the computer. The screen should be about an arm’s length away. Position the monitor so its center is four to eight inches below your eyes. This way, your neck can relax while you read and type.

  6. Get your eyes checked annually. A comprehensive eye exam can treat or help prevent computer eye strain issues. Make sure to tell your doctor how much time you spend in front of a screen, both at work and home.

Today, it’s not uncommon to spend most of your workday in front of a computer. However, if you develop eye strain as a result of your job, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits help cover your medical treatment and lost wages. If you have a permanent loss of function from your NJ work injury, you may also be entitled to a cash settlement.

Because CVS cannot be linked to one specific incident, it is often difficult to prove that your injury is work-related. A Morristown workers’ compensation lawyer can help you receive the benefits you deserve. Manfred Ricciardelli has over 20 years of experience protecting the rights of injured workers in New Jersey.
