Activists claim Apple iPhone workers exposed to toxic chemicals
Posted on Mar 18, 2014
Two activist groups have called on Apple to stop using harmful chemicals that threaten the health of Chinese factory workers.
Currently, Apple uses chemicals such as n-hexane and benzene to manufacture iPhones. Exposure to these chemicals puts workers at an increased risk of developing leukemia, nerve damage, and reproductive health issues.
We don't know about workers' compensation in China, but in New Jersey, these workers would certainly be entitled to benefits for their injuries.
New Jersey workers' compensation law recognizes that not all injuries happen suddenly. Some injuries are caused by repetitive strain, exposure to a dangerous chemical, or the day-to-day demands of the job. Although these injuries happen over time, they are just as serious as the ones caused by sudden accidents.
Whether your injury happened suddenly or over a long period of time, you are still entitled to workers' compensation benefits. These benefits may include fully paid medical care, pay for lost wages, and a cash settlement for your injuries.
With an occupational exposure, you cannot pinpoint the date and time you were injured. This can make it extremely difficult to prove that your injury is work-related.
