Man Killed on the Job at Hummel Machine and Tool Company in Kearny, New Jersey

May 31, 2012 - Kearny, N.J. - A man was killed on the job when a piece of aluminum flew out of a machine at Hummel Machine and Tool Company on Friday, May 25.
According to the report in The Star-Ledger, the incident happened at 1:50 p.m. when David Kornas was turning off a CNC fabricating machine at Hummel. The machine made a strange noise before shooting out a piece of partially fabricated aluminum, which struck Kornas in the head and neck.
According to a co-worker, there was a loud bang and then Kornas was seen lying on the floor, bleeding out of his neck. Kearny EMS responded to the incident. Kornas was treated at the scene before being rushed toUniversityHospital inNewark, where he died a short time later.
Authorities with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration handled the investigation.
