Social Security to Expedite Disability Claims for Veterans
Posted on Mar 07, 2014
The Social Security Administration recently announced that veterans who have a 100 percent disability rating will soon get their Social Security claims processed faster.
Many veterans are returning from overseas conflicts and have suffered injuries that make it impossible for them to go back to work. Under the new policy, Social Security will treat veterans' claims as high priority and issue quicker decisions. This move could cut months off the wait for disability benefits.
Plans call for the expedited process to begin this month.
“Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it is only right that we ensure they have timely access to the disability benefits they may be eligible for and deserve,” said Carolyn Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security.
In order to qualify for the expedited service, veterans must inform Social Security about their 100 percent disability rating. They must also show proof of the rating with their Veterans Affairs Notification Letter.
The change doesn't guarantee that veterans will be approved – just that they'll get a decision more quickly.
