Woman Will Face Charges After Causing Fatal Head-On Collision in Brick

A Brick resident has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide after causing an Ocean County car crash that killed a 65-year-old woman on the evening of December 18.
Township police have said that 60-year-old Deborah Tadych was driving south in her 2008 Hyundai Sonata on Herbertsville Road near Sawmill Road in Brick when she suddenly crossed the double-yellow line, swerving the vehicle and striking a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis traveling northbound.
Susan Steeper, the driver of the Mercury, was struck head-on by Tadych’s vehicle. Steeper remained trapped in her car until firefighters were able to extricate her from the wreckage. She was transported to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center where she died shortly afterwards from serious internal injuries.
According to Brick police, Tadych was also hospitalized after that accident with a fractured hip. She was released on January 3, when she was immediately arrested on charges of death by auto, officials said.
Sergeant David Bedrosian, the supervisor of the traffic safety unit, told the media that the township had seen more than 100 percent increase in fatal crashes from the previous year.
“It’s a hidden story,” he said. “For unknown reasons there is a spike in pedestrian accidents, and others are related to vehicle speed and alcohol.”
Steeper was the ninth person killed in township traffic accidents in 2012.
Bedrosian declined to comment on the details of Tadych’s arrest or the particulars of the accident in order to avoid jeopardizing the upcoming court case. However, it was confirmed that Tadych would remain at the Ocean County jail on $50,000 bail until her arraignment.
